Yeah, Mort, they are good. A lot of them are as pretty cringe-inducingly bad as we probably remember, but a few of them (particularly the ones aimed at scaring children!) stand out. “Dark and Lonely Water” totally shit me up. :) I don’t know how ‘When on Motorways…’ can be from 1974 if I remember it, though – maybe they have a really long lifespan!
As for ‘Protect and Survive’, I hope the latest government scare-fest about terrorism uses such a bizarre synthesised noise as its signature tune – I’m sure the noise alone brings back some lovely memories for lots of people! Incidentally, if you ever watch the BBC drama ‘Threads’, you get to see a full suite of Protect and Survive ads – though whether the ones in the, erm, later stages, were authentic or not, I don’t know…
