Repetedly tried many distos on few machines -- they all failed. The last Mandrake 10.1 - do not support centrino CPU fully. Somtimes does not even boot as I learned. Ufter spending $$$ on free CDs, free downloads and many wasted days I return to Windows. BTW after trying Linux applications like spreadsheets I realized how far behind they are. Even moderately complex excel table is not working, functions are so limited and no VBA Linux does not do what is main for OS – support hardware. I don’t think some people should be allowed to use computers until they’ve reached the level where you can mutter a few words and wave in their general direction to get them working.
User friendly usually means watered down and hand holding. It’s possible to make things “easier” to the extent where you find it harder to accomplish more technical tasks. Eg, some user friendly distros not having a shortcut to the console.
Oh and that problem must be with debian or the package, gentoo generally handles that stuff fairly well.
There are newbie friendly distros, but they’re almost as bad as windows ;
